7 Things to Remember for Your Handicap Accecible Van this Winter!

Christmas is Right around the corner! What better gift can you give to yourself and to your loved ones then saftey! Although the snow covered treetops look beautiful outside it can get dangerous if you and your vehicle are not prepared.

  1. Its important to schedule your annual maintenance appointments to keep your van running properly.
  2. Maintain your van’s mobility equipment! Check tracks on all the doors to make sure there is no unwanted debris. This is important because it can cause the motor on your door to slowly burn out and you don’t want to have non working doors during this ridged weather!
  3. Make sure your windshield is ready for the weather ahead! It is important to have visibility while driving during a winter storm or any winter weather! Check the windshield wipers to make sure they are up to date and fully functioning. Don’t forget your defrosters! It’s important that both front and back are working properly. Lastly check for any cracks in the windshield, with the hot and cold temperatures on your glass it can cause any small cracks to expand and can lead to the replacement of the whole windshield!
  4. Fluids fluids! Make sure all your vehicles fluids are filled such as your anti freeze, windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid and your power steering fluid.
  5. Do all your lights work?  It’s important to check and make sure all your exterior light are all working. Your lights are essential to driving on the road at anytime but especially during the slippery and dark roads that may come with winter weather. They not only help you see the road but they also make others more visible to you on the road.
  6. Check your brakes and tires. Its crucial to be able to stop in winter’s bad weather, make sure both your brakes and tires are properly functioning! We want to keep all of our loved ones safe.
  7. How is your battery? Make sure to annually check the battery and make sure it’s 100%. The cold winter weather is draining on any van’s battery but especially on a handicap accessible van because it has a lot more functions that it needs to do for example the lift system and the motor ramps.

Mobility vans with good windshield whipers are critical

describe the imagewindshild wipersWindshield WipersGood windshield wipers are not only critical when driving in the wet and or snowy weather conditions, but when driving your mobility van daily all year around.  Things like road grime, bugs, oil, and dust can make for poor visability caused by sun glare or oncoming headlights at night.  Good windshield wipers along with a properly adjusted windshield washers are essential in keeping your windshield clean and glare free.

It is recommended that wiper blades be replaced once a year to maintain optimum wiping performance.  Blades that are exposed to harsh weather conditions (direct sunlight from being parked outdoors, and or in a hot climate) may need to be replaced more often, probably every six months.

Wiper blades age faster when being exposed to sunlight and heat or abrasive conditions like sand and dust.  Older blades lose their flexibility and may streak or chatter on the windshield. The life of your wiper blade also depends upon how often the wipers are used (more frequent use accelerates wear) how much dirt and grime that the blades are exposed to (silica dust is abrasive and wears away the sharp square cut edge on the blade that is necessary for a clean and clear wipe).  Strong chemicals like windshield washer solvents and cleaners may harm the blade and thus limit their useful life.

When the wiper blades are streaking, smearing, chattering or skipping, or if the blade is torn or damaged they should be replaced. It is better to keep an eye on the condition of the blades and replace them before they reach this point. With older style wiper blades that have metal frames, there is a risk of permanently scratching the windshield if a tear or damaged blade allows the metal frame to rub against the glass.

Make sure that your new blade is of the same configuration and length as the original to avoid interference problems. Many vehicles have different length wipers for the driver and passenger side so make sure both sides are the correct length and mounting configuration to fit the application.  Most autoparts stores will have a chart to guide you in the purchase of the correct wiper blades for your mobility van.  The auto parts store may even replace them for yoy.  Beam style wiper blades are now more popular than the old frame blades. Beam blades also can be retrofitted to many older vehicles to upgrade wiper apparence and performance. With beam style blades, the rubber wiping element is molded around an internal flat metal spring. The spring or springs provide support and stiffness so that the blade makes good contact and follows the curvature of the windshield. The low profile aerodynamic shape of beam style blades also reduces wind lift and noise at highway speeds and also resist snow build up and clogging during winter conditions.

Most handicap accessible vans have a rear wiper that also needs to be maintained. Make sure you keep a good supply of windshield washer fluid so it will be on hand when you need it. There also is available windshield treatments that repel water and road grime which you might consider applying to your windshield or rear window to help improve your visability during .

In the wintertime it is necessary to clear all snow and ice off of your windshield and wiper arms before you turn on the wipers. Remember, safe driving also includes good visibility. Make sure you do not forget to include wiper blades in your maintenance program.

Have a good safe driving experience.  Do not forget to check other important items such as your emergency kit, tire pressures, oil and transmission fluids.

Used Wheelchair Vans - The Affordable Choice

used handicap vanPurchasing a handicapped van is a major investment, and one that you want to last you for a long time. If you've never considered buying a used wheelchair van, then here are some great reasons why you should do so:

Advantages of Purchasing a Used Handicapped Van

  • This one's kind of a no-brainer, but it's a biggie -  you'll save $$ over the price of a new handicapped van. By doing some careful comparison shopping, it's very possible to find a used wheelchair van in great shape that has low miles and little wear and tear..
  • When you buy direct from manufacturers over the internet, you won't have the chance to test drive a van prior to purchase, so visiting a brick & mortar local dealership affords you that advantage, as well as often having a selection of excellent used vans on the lot, from which you can choose..
  • One other advantage of visiting a local dealership is that when you make your purchase directly online from a manufacturer, they won't be able to provide your van's service maintenance needs. And should you have an emergency breakdown, the manufacturer isn't available to help you out of that unfortunate jam.

Agor Enterprises is a multi-point dealership group. We're family owned and have been in business for over 40 years. We offer high quality new and used handicapped vans, as well as providing excellent service for those vehicles. Our mobile service unit and 24 hour emergency service enables us to help you keep rolling. We also sell sell a wide variety of quality handicap equipment and accessories.

Good News for Those Using Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Labor Department Shows Employment Gain for Americans with Disabilities

More wheelchair accessible vehicles are flooding the highways these days. While the jobless rate for the general population seems to have hit a plateau, the employment landscape for Americans with disabilities shows that “promise” is the word for 2013. Experts tout systems like the Ticket to Work program, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and the Americans with Disabilities Act for the rise in opportunities being given to individuals with disabilities in the workplace today.

The end of 2012 showed a steady decrease in the unemployment rate for Americans with disabilities. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities fell to 11.7 percent in December, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor. December’s rate is down from the 12.7 percent reported in November. With the decrease, December marked the fourth consecutive month that the unemployment rate declined for those with disabilities.

There hasn’t actually been a study done showing the increase of wheelchair accessible vehicles traffic, but The Labor Department did begin tracking employment rates of people with disabilities in late 2008. Enough data is not yet available to show proven seasonal trends among this population, so statistics for this group are not seasonally adjusted. Reports are now released monthly on the most up to date statistics of unemployment among Americans with disabilities.

While we are seeing more wheelchair accessible vehicles on the roads and the increase in jobs available to people with disabilities is a promising step forward for 2013, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities remains higher than the national average. The economy as a whole added 146,000 jobs in November 2012, lowering the unemployment count down to 7.7 percent.

Selecting Your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Now that you have made the decision to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle, you need to shop around for the best provider. Many folks turn to a mobility specialist dealer. Here are some considerations you may want to keep in mind when doing your research and shopping.
  1. Stock – What brands of vehicle does the dealer offer? Do they have a wide-range of vehicles for you to choose from? Do they provide both new and used choices? Do they convert other vehicles besides vans, like SUVs and trucks?
  2. Range of Conversions – Does the company offer the ramp and product options that are specified to your needs? Do their vehicles provide the safety features and equipment you need?
  3. Aesthetics – Which vehicle best fits your personality and will keep you happy in the long run?
  4. Location – Is the dealer close to where you live?
  5. Funds and Financing – Is purchasing from this provider beneficial to you in terms of cost? Do they provide a range of priced vehicles, or are all of their products around the same price?
  6. Reviews – What have others said about this company? Are they a reputable dealer or have they had issues? Does the dealer provide feedback from previous customers or is it hard to find customer reviews?
  7. On-Site Evaluations – In addition to the evaluation from my Certified Rehabilitation Specialist, will I receive another evaluation from the dealer? How will they know the equipment will fit properly? Will it be safe for me to drive?
  8. Training – Once I have purchased my vehicle, how will I learn to use my new equipment? Will the dealer provide me training? Will they be available to address any questions I may have regarding the use of my equipment?
  9. Customer Care – What does the company provide for you? Do they offer incentives like 24-hour local emergency service, warranties and/or trained Ability Specialists that can help you in your decision?
  10. Dealers – Is the mobility specialist well informed and up-to-date on the technical skills necessary in today’s mobility market? Do they belong to the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association – the industry association for safe and reliable transportation options for people with disabilities?
Each of these factors are important to consider during the buying process. Before making a decision, contact Agor Enterprises (your local NMEDA dealer) to assure the needs of your physical disability are met with your driving independence top of mind.

When it comes to finding the right transportation solution for your needs the options are almost endless. There’s minivans, trucks, wheelchair and scooter carriers, lifts, ramps, hand controls, transfer seats etc. To ensure you are getting the right mobility products for your specific needs it’s important to get the help of an experienced mobility equipment dealer. Agor Enterprises has been in business for many years and over that time have gained the knowledge and expertise to fit you with the very best product for your situation.

Quality mobility equipment dealers will meet with you in person to help determine your individual needs and what adaptive vehicle or equipment is best for you. They’ll ask you questions about you, your disability, your wheelchair or scooter, how you’ll be using the vehicle, will there be additional drivers, your budget etc.

It’s important that you ask the mobility equipment dealer some specific questions, as well. You’ll need to find out if they offer 24-hour emergency assistance, are their technicians trained and certified, and are they a NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) member. You then have to ask yourself if you feel like they’re easy to work with and ultimately if you want to do business with this dealership.

Whether you buy new or used will depend on your finances but the most important thing is that the vehicle is designed to fit your requirements. Your local mobility dealer is the key to getting you into the right vehicle. Based on your disability they’ll determine what the best transportation solution is for you.

5 Most Important Steps in Choosing an Accessible Vehicle

adaptive equipment

If you are a person with disabilities and don’t yet have an accessible vehicle, it’s difficult to know where to start. You’ve worked with your doctor and therapist, maybe even a certified driver rehabilitation specialist (CDRS), but they don’t know your budget, your preferred car or van, or where the nearest mobility dealer is.

Your medical team will help, of course, but you have homework to do:

1. Set a budget

How much can you afford to pay for a new or used van? Figure in the down payment, monthly payment, insurance, gas and an estimate for yearly maintenance. Look for rebates, grants, loans, etc. to help reduce the price tag.

2. Research, research, research

Your doctor or therapist may recommend necessary adaptive equipment, but there may be other equipment you’d like. Check out the many options available now.

3. Testing, testing

If you can, test drive different vehicles at the mobility dealership to get the feel of spaciousness, ease or difficulty of loading, driving and parking, etc.

As you narrow the choices down, you might want to rent your top choice for a weekend or week-long trip. Time on the road will determine if the make and model are right for you.

4. Ask yourself these questions

  • Does it fit lengthwise and width-wide in my driveway or garage?
  • Is there space enough for the ramp or lift to deploy?
  • Can I easily reach and work all the controls?
  • Is the seat comfortable?  (Like your favorite chair at home—can you sit in it for hours and still be comfortable?)

There are many factors to consider that you may not have thought about until you test drive several candidates.

5. Find a mobility dealer

Visit your local QAP mobility dealer to speak with an expert in accessible mobility needs. NMEDA’s Quality Assurance Program members are required to follow guidelines written in accordance with motor vehicle safety standards, and professionally managed quality control practices that advocate the highest level of performance and safety. They also provide 24-hour service to their customers.

Wheelchair Vans Improve Mobility

wheelchair van

If you or a loved one is physically challenged, getting around can be difficult.  It can be especially hard to find transportation from place to place because of the use of a wheelchair.  Wheelchair vans are the best way to transport those who are in wheelchairs or scooters.  The use of these types of vans is essential in helping improve the ability for wheelchair-bound people to get out and about.

You may choose to purchase a new or used van or you may want to add features to your own vehicle that will improve the mobility of those in a wheelchair.  Special features will easily accommodate a wheelchair or scooter and provide the mobility that is often difficult to establish.  The Wheelchair van is essential when you want to provide better access to the outside world.

The full sized van and the minivan make the best choices for accessible vehicles.  The full sized van lends itself to the adaptation easily, because it already is large enough to hold a wheelchair or scooter.  A minivan typically requires the floor to be lowered to allow for the wheelchair to fit comfortably inside.  The choice of van style is usually based on personal preference.

The van will require a lift in order to get the chair or scooter into the vehicle.  The lift is an easy way to get both the wheelchair and passenger into the van.  There are different styles available.  They mount in either the rear or side door of the van, allowing easy access to get the chair into the vehicle.  Choose to lift only the chair alone or the chair with passenger, into the van.

Once inside the van, the wheelchair or scooter is locked into place to ensure that it doesn’t move while the van is moving.  Special controls are available for drivers who are disabled.  These controls allow the driver to use the brake and gas with their hands, rather than with their feet.
